Student to compete at international guitar competition

School of Music student Campbell Diamond is one of 16 guitar students from around the world who has been selected to compete at an international guitar competition in Japan in December.

Campbell, a third year guitar performance student at the School of Music, competed against other finalists from Ukraine, Russia, Poland, Germany, Spain, Austria, China, Japan and the UK at the 56th Tokyo International Guitar Competition on 9 December.

Campbell, who began studying music at ANU in 2010 under the tutelage of Timothy Kain and Minh Le Hoang says: “Canberra has been recognised for decades as the place to go for tertiary study in guitar.

“The opportunity to learn with Tim and Minh is as good as anyone could ask for. Their formidable knowledge of the instrument, along with their empathy and dedication to each student is just remarkable.”

The competition is held in the beautiful Hakuju Hall in Shibuya, where Campbell will be performing music by Antonio Jose, Domenico Scarlatti,J.K. Mertz as well as compulsory pieces by J.S. Bach and Akira Miyoshi. The top six competitors will advance to the 10 December finals.

From Tokyo, Campbell will fly to Bucharest, Romania, to compete in the Eduard Pamfil International Guitar Competition, which is part of a two-day guitar symposium  attracting many notable guitarists, composers, luthiers and enthusiasts worldwide.

Campbell will then spend a month travelling throughout Germany, France and Austria, participating in classes with some of the world’s finest guitar pedagogues, including Thomas Muller-Pering, Judicael Perroy, Hubert Kappel, Aniello Desiderio and Franz Halasz.
